Intermolecular π+π interactions promote self-assembly of individually non-luminescent protonated pyridine luminophores in solution, resulting in intermolecular charge-transfer type emission. The luminescence turn-on by protonation is utilized for the sensing of HCl and sulfonic acids in solution with sensing limits below 1 ppm.
